The Island Games Come to the Isle of Wight
The 14th every year Island Games are heading to the Isle of Wight in 2011 for the second time in the competitions 25 year history. Colse to 4,000 athletes from 25 islands across the world will come to the Isle of Wight to compete in 14 events over 7 days of piquant competition. |

The Island Games might not be as familiar as the Olympics but this international event is growing in popularity each and every year. The competition started in on the Isle of Man in 1985 as the Inter-Island Games, which formed part of the Isle of Man's international Year of Sport, and was originally intended to be a one off event. 15 islands took part, which included islands surrounding the Uk as well as the countries of Iceland and Malta and the territories of the Channel Islands, Greenland, Saint Helena and the Faroe Islands. With them they brought some 600 athletes to contentious in the 7 events. The games proved so favorite that they have been held every two years since with islands across Europe taking it in turn to host the event. The games will begin on the Isle of Wight on the 25th June and are due to close on the 1st July. The games will be opened with a spectacular chance ceremony which is to be held in Ryde on Saturday 25th June 2011. The chance ceremony will be 14 months in the making and is set to involve over 1,000 young students who will all help to create the spectacular ceremony which is set to include a carnival parade straight through the street of Ryde before a special operation on the seafront where the games will be officially opened. The event is staggering to be viewed by up to 30,000 population as well as a Tv audience from across the world. Some of the piquant sports, visitors to the Isle of Wight can look send to seeing during the games include Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cycling, Football, Golf, Sailing, Shooting, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball and Windsurfing. While lacking the world celebrated athletes of the Olympics the Islands Games are bound to put on a sceptical with competitors giving their all to win a gold medal in this cordial and relaxed sporting event.
