Live Every Day As If It Were Your Last-Comair

Do you know how long you will live? Most of us do not. We can hazard a guess or a wish, but unless we are staring death in the face then we do not know. While I often urge my readers to live their lives fully and joyfully, recent events here in the bluegrass have made me even more aware of the need to live my life as if each day was my last.

I live a few miles east of Lexington, Kentucky, where on Sunday Comair Flight 5191 taking off from Bluegrass Airport with 50 people on board crashed and 49 were killed. The victims of the crash had family and friends who loved them and had lives to be lived. Some were young people just embarking on life. One couple had just been married the night before. Another couple was engaged to be married. Many passengers were middle aged and had already made wonderful contributions, for example one man was Habitat's National Volunteer of the Year in 2004, but who knows what other lives and events they could have influenced in the long decades they should have lived. However you can be sure that none of those people expected their lives to end that morning.

Life is like that. Simply being a human alive brings risks. Sometimes it is disease, sometimes accident, and sometimes deliberate violence, but we do not know what day will be our last and that is why it is so important to live life fully and joyfully.

If you knew today was your last day then what would you do? I'm not suggesting you quit your job, tell off the neighbors or stop paying your bills, but rather to look at the areas of your life that matter most to you. You know what they are and while there are certainly common areas they are also as individual as humans. Do more every day to appreciate and enjoy the people and activities that make your life worth living.

How often do you tell those closest to you how much they matter to you? Do you say "I love you" every day? When did you last embrace the person that is nearest to your heart? When did you last simply spend time together?

Treat yourself well at least once a day. I do not mean you need to splurge and buy yourself a present every day, but rather to give yourself some time every day to relax and enjoy life whether it is reading a book, watching the sunset, or snuggling with your dog.

What regrets would you have and what dreams would be unfulfilled? Remember, putting off your hopes and wishes for future years can well mean you never give them a chance. Find a way to follow your dreams and live the life you desire.

Finally, take a look at your life and root out the causes of your distress and unhappiness. No matter whether you live one day, one year, or one hundred years, life is simply too short to spend it with people you do not like and/or doing things that make you unhappy. Change your life now and may your next 100 years be filled with joy.

Live every day as if it were your last and make sure to tell and show your loved ones how much you care, treat yourself well, pursue your dreams, and jettison the life-wasting debris in your life. May we all live our lives to the fullest.

Due to the success of education system, and the rise of internet, the customer has access to so much information that was unavailable to them in the past.

This resulted in the customer has so much power to choose. They can simply walk away from your business.

Every company, large and small, must be thinking day and night about how to please customers faster, better, and cheaper than their competitors.

The very best companies are built on this philosophy. They have an obsession with customer service.

They are continually looking for ways to please their customers better than any of their competitors. You must have heard this, "The customer is always right".

You cannot satisfy people with goods or paper of any kind. People are emotional, and they can be satisfied only as the result of their interactions with other people.

According to a Harvard study, fully 68% of dissatisfied customers who changed suppliers did so because of the indifference of one or more people in the company.

This is why the most successful companies have very clear customer satisfaction policies, usually in writing. Everyone in those organizations is committed to treating customers well.

For example, the Walt Disney Corporation hires thousand of college students to work at the Disney theme parks in the summertime.

These students are hired in the middle of May and trained for four to six weeks in their functions. They then work for approximately eight weeks of the summer season when children are out of school and the theme parks are the busiest.

Why did the students receive such rigorous training, lasting four to six weeks, to then work for only eight weeks before going back to school?

Disney executives explain that the students are drilled in their jobs to the point where they can do them without thinking. This allows them to concentrate their attention on the visitors.

Because the students have memorized their jobs completely, they are more conscious of the small things they can do to make people happy that they have chosen to come to a Disney amusement park.

The best companies learned a long time ago that the people they select will largely determine their success.

They therefore take a long time to hire people and are very careful in both interviewing and in checking references.

Once a person has been hired, if that hiree is the wrong person, he or she can cause a great deal of harm before being let go.

Is your business built around customer satisfaction? Do that for your business, because that's the way to go.

The imperceptible Women of the Great Depression

During the Great Depression, women made up 25% of the work force, but their jobs were more unstable, temporary or seasonal then men, and the unemployment rate was much greater. There was also a decided bias and cultural view that "women didn't work" and in fact many who were employed full time often called themselves "homemakers." Neither men in the workforce, the unions, nor any branch of government were ready to accept the reality of working women, and this bias caused females intense hardship while the Great Depression.

The 1930's was particularly hard on single, divorced or widowed women, but it was harder still on women who weren't White. Women of color had to overcome both sexual and racial stereotyping. Black women in the North suffered an remarkable 42.9% unemployment, while 23.2%. Of White women were without work according to the 1937 census. In the South, both Black and White women were equally unemployed at 26%. In contrast, the unemployment rate for Black and White men in the North (38.9%/18.1%) and South (18%/16% respectively) were also lower than female counterparts.

The financial situation in Harlem was bleak even before the Great Depression. But afterward, the emerging Black working class in the North was decimated by wholesale layoffs of Black commercial workers. To be Black and a woman alone, made holding a job or seeing other one nearly impossible. The racial work hierarchy replaced Black women in waitressing or domestic work, with White women, now desperate for work, and willing to take steep wage cuts.

Survival Entrepreneurs
At the start of the Depression, while one study found that homeless women were most likely factory and aid workers, domestics, garment workers, waitresses and beauticians; other recommend that the beauty manufactures was a major source of revenue for Black women. These women, later known as "survivalist entrepreneurs," became self-employed in response to a desperate need to find an independent means of livelihood."

Replaced by White women in more original domestic work as cooks, maids, nurses, and laundresses, even skilled and educated Black women were so hopeless, ''that they nothing else but offered their services at the so-called 'slave markets'-street corners where Negro women congregated to await White housewives who came daily to take their pick and bid wages down'' (Boyd, 2000 citing Drake and Cayton, 1945/1962:246). Moreover, the home domestic aid was very difficult, if not impossible, to coordinate with house responsibilities, as the domestic slave was commonly on call ''around the clock'' and was branch to the ''arbitrary power of private employers.''


Inn Keepers and Hairdressers
Two occupations were sought out by Black women, in order to address both the need for revenue (or barter items) and their domestic responsibilities in northern cities while the Great Depression: (1) boarding house and lodging house keeping; and (2) hairdressing and beauty culture.

During the "Great Migration" of 1915-1930, thousands of Blacks from the South, mostly young, particular men, streamed into Northern cities, seeing for places to stay temporarily while they searched for housing and jobs. Housing these migrants created opportunities for Black working-class women,-now unemployed-to pay their rent.

According to one estimate, ''at least one-third'' of Black families in the urban North had lodgers or boarders while the Great Migration (Thomas, 1992:93, citing Henri, 1976). The need was so great, multiple boarders were housed, leading one survey of northern Black families to article that ''seventy-five percent of the Negro homes have so many lodgers that they are nothing else but hotels.''

Women were commonly at the center of these webs of house and community networks within the Black community:

"They ''undertook the most part of the burden'' of helping the newcomers find interim housing. Women played ''connective and leadership roles'' in northern Black communities, not only because it was determined original "woman's work," but also because taking in boarders and lodgers helped Black women concentrate housework with an informal, income-producing performance (Grossman, 1989:133). In addition, boarding and lodging house holding was often combined with other types of self-employment. Some of the Black women who kept boarders and lodgers also earned money by production synthetic flowers and lamp shades at home." (Boyd, 2000)

In increasing from 1890 to 1940, ''barbers and hairdressers'' were the largest segments of the Black business population, together comprising about one third of this population in 1940 (Boyd, 2000 citing Oak, 1949:48).

"Blacks tended to gravitate into these occupations because "White barbers, hairdressers, and beauticians were unwilling or unable to style the hair of Blacks or to furnish the hair preparations and cosmetics used by them. Thus, Black barbers, hairdressers, and beauticians had a ''protected consumer market'' based on Whites' desires for collective distance from Blacks and on the extra demands of Black consumers. Accordingly, these Black entrepreneurs were sheltered from exterior competitors and could monopolize the trades of beauty culture and hairdressing within their own communities.

Black women who were seeking jobs believed that one's appearance was a crucial factor in seeing employment. Black self-help organizations in northern cities, such as the Urban League and the National Council of Negro Women, stressed the significance of good grooming to the newly arrived Black women from the South, advising them to have neat hair and clean nails when searching for work. Above all, the women were told avoid wearing ''head rags'' and ''dust caps'' in collective (Boyd, 2000 citing Drake and Cayton, 1945/1962:247, 301; Grossman, 1989:150-151).

These warnings were particularly relevant to those who were seeing for secretarial or white-collar jobs, for Black women needed right hair and light skin to have any opening of obtaining such positions. Despite the hard times, beauty parlors and barber shops were the most numerous and viable Black-owned enterprises in Black communities (e.g., Boyd, 2000 citing Drake and Cayton, 1945/1962:450-451).

Black women entrepreneurs in the urban North also opened market and restaurants, with modest savings ''as a means of securing a living'' (Boyd, 2000 citing Frazier, 1949:405). Called ''depression businesses,'' these marginal enterprises were often classified as proprietorships, even though they tended to control out of ''houses, basements, and old buildings'' (Boyd, 2000 citing Drake and Cayton, 1945/1962:454).

"Food market and eating and drinking places were the most common of these businesses, because, if they failed, their owners could still live off their stocks."

"Protestant Whites Only"
These businesses were a necessity for Black women, as the preference for hiring Whites climbed steeply while the Depression. In the Philadelphia collective Employment Office in 1932 & 1933, 68% of job orders for women specified "Whites Only." In New York City, Black women were forced to go to detach unemployment offices in Harlem to seek work. Black churches and church-related institutions, a original source of help to the Black community, were overwhelmed by the demand, while the 1930's. Municipal shelters, required to "accept everyone," still reported that Catholics and African American women were "particularly hard to place."

No one knows the numbers of Black women left homeless in the early thirty's, but it was no doubt substantial, and invisible to the mostly white investigators. Instead, the media chose to focus on, and publicize the plight of White, homeless, middle-class "white collar" workers, as, by 1931 and 1932, unemployment spread to this middle-class. White-collar and college-educated women, commonly accustomed "to quarterly employment and carport domicile," became the "New Poor." We don't know the homeless rates for these women, beyond an educated guess, but of all the homeless in urban centers, 10% were recommend to be women. We do know, however, that the interrogate for "female beds" in shelters climbed from a bit over 3,000 in 1920 to 56,808 by 1932 in one city and in another, from 1929 -1930, interrogate rose 270%.

"Having an Address is a Luxury Now..."
Even these beds, however, were the last stop on the path towards homelessness and were designed for "habitually destitute" women, and avoided at all cost by those who were homeless for the first time. Some number ended up in shelters, but even more were not registered with any agency. Resources were few. accident home relief was restricted to families with dependent children until 1934. "Having an address is a luxury just now" an unemployed college woman told a collective laborer in 1932.

These newly destitute urban women were the shocked and dazed who drifted from one unemployment office to the next, resting in Grand Central or Pennsylvania station, and who rode the subway all night (the "five cent room"), or slept in the park, and who ate in penny kitchens. Slow to seek assistance, and fearful and ashamed to ask for charity, these women were often on the verge of starvation before they sought help. They were, according to one report, often the "saddest and most difficult to help." These women "starved slowly in furnished rooms. They sold their furniture, their clothes, and then their bodies."

The Emancipated Woman and Gender Myths
If cultural myths were that women "didn't work," then those that did were invisible. Their political voice was mute. Gender role demanded that women remain "someone's poor relation," who returned back to the rural homestead while times of trouble, to help out colse to the home, and were given shelter. These idyllic nurturing, pre-industrial mythical house homes were large adequate to adapt everyone. The new reality was much bleaker. Urban apartments, no bigger than two or three rooms, required "maiden aunts" or "single cousins" to "shift for themselves." What remained of the house was often a strained, overburdened, over-crowded household that often contained severe domestic troubles of its own.

In addition, few, other than African Americans, were with the rural roots to return to. And this assumed that a woman once emancipated and tasting past success would remain "malleable." The female role was an out-of-date myth, but was nonetheless a potent one. The "new woman" of the roaring twenties was now left without a collective face while the Great Depression. Without a home--the quintessential element of womanhood--she was, paradoxically, ignored and invisible.

In reality, more than half of these employed women had never married, while others were divorced, deserted, separated or claimed to be widowed. We don't know how many were lesbian women. Some had dependent parents and siblings who relied on them for support. Fewer had children who were living with extended family. Women's wages were historically low for most female professions, and allowed miniature capacity for gigantic "emergency" savings, but most of these women were financially independent. In Milwaukee, for example, 60% of those seeking help had been self-supporting in 1929. In New York, this figure was 85%. Their ready work was often the most vaporing and at risk. Some had been unemployed for months, while others for a year or more. With savings and insurance gone, they had tapped out their informal collective networks. One collective worker, in late 1931, testified to a Senate committee that "neighborliness has been stretched not only beyond its capacity but beyond human endurance."

Older women were often discriminated against because of their age, and their long history of living exterior of original house systems. When work was available, it often specified, as did one job in Philadelphia, a interrogate for "white stenographers and clerks, under (age) 25."

The invisible Woman
The Great Depression's corollary on women, then, as it is now, was invisible to the eye. The tangible evidence of breadlines, Hoovervilles, and men selling apples on road corners, did not comprise images of urban women. Unemployment, hunger and homelessness was determined a "man's problem" and the distress and despair was measured in that way. In photographic images, and news reports, destitute urban women were overlooked or not apparent. It was determined unseemly to be a homeless woman, and they were often underground from collective view, ushered in through back door entrances, and fed in private.

Partly, the question lay in expectations. While homelessness in men had swelled periodically while periods of economic crisis, since the depression of the 1890's onward, large numbers of homeless women "on their own" were a new phenomenon. collective officials were unprepared: Without children, they were, early on, excluded from accident shelters. One construction with a capacity of 155 beds and six cribs, lodged over 56,000 "beds" while the third year of the depression. Still, these figures do not take account the number of women turned away, because they weren't White or Protestant.

As the Great Depression wore on, wanting only a way to make money, these women were excluded from "New Deal" work programs set up to help the unemployed. Men were seen as "breadwinners," holding greater claim to economic resources. While outreach and charitable agencies ultimately did emerge, they were often inadequate to meet the demand.

Whereas black women had particular hard times participating in the mainstream cheaper while the Great Depression, they did have some opening to find alternative employment within their own communities, because of unique migration patterns that had occurred while that period. White women, in contrast, had a keyhole opportunity, if they were young and of requisite skills, although their skin color alone offered them greater access to anyone original employment was still available.

The rejection of original female roles, and the desire for emancipation, however, put these women at profound risk once the cheaper collapsed. In any case, particular women, with both black and white skin, fared worse and were invisible sufferers.

As we enter the Second Great Depression, who will be the new "invisible homeless" and will women, as a group, fare good this time?

Defining Your Service Culture

Organizations go to great lengths to differentiate themselves from one another, usually at much expense. In reality, it is often their service culture that has one of the biggest impacts on customers and helps a customer decide whether or not to do business with the organization.

What is a service culture in an organization?

The answer to this question is that it culture is different for each organization. No two organizations operate in the same manner, have the same focus, or provide management that accomplishes the same results. Among other things, a culture includes values, beliefs, norms, rituals, and practices of a group or organization. Any policy, procedure, action, or inaction on the part of an organization, and its employees contribute to the service culture. Most importantly, each employee plays a key role in communicating the culture to its customers. This may include such things as personal appearance, the way employees interact with customers, and service provider's knowledge, skill and attitude level. Culture also encompasses an organization's products and services, and the physical appearance of the organization's facility, equipment, or any other aspect of the organization with which the customer comes into contact.

Service culture is comprised of many facets with each impacting customers and helping to determine the success or failure of customer service initiatives. Too often, organizations over-promise and under-deliver because their cultural and internal systems (infrastructure) do not have the ability to support customer service initiatives. For example, assume that the management of an organization has their marketing department develop a slick piece of literature describing all the benefits of a new product or service provided by a new corporate partner organization. They then establish a special 800 number for responses, but fail to hire additional staff or adequately train current employees to handle the customer calls. The project is likely doomed to fail.

The Role of Service Philosophy and Mission

Generally, an organization's approach to business, or philosophy, is driven from the top of the organization. Upper management, including members of the board of directors, when appropriate, set the vision or tone and direction of the organization. Without a clearly planned and communicated vision, the service ethic ends at the highest levels. This is often a stumbling block where many organizations falter due to indecision or dissension at upper echelons.

Leadership, real and perceived, is crucial to customer service success. Members of upper management in successful organizations make themselves clearly visible to frontline employees and are in tune with customer needs and expectations.

When members of management stay locked away in the boardroom or are perceived as spending their time in their office or on the golf course, employee devotion to good service is tested. As the old adage goes "action speaks louder than words." While it is wonderful when organizations go to the trouble of developing and hanging a nicely framed formal mission or philosophy statement on a wall, if it is not a functional way of life for employees, it serves little purpose.

Employee Roles and Expectations

There are many additional tasks and responsibilities assigned to frontline customer service providers. Depending on the job description for a position and size and type of the organization and industry involved, these roles and expectations may be similar from one organization to another, yet performed in a variety of different ways. Such roles and expectations are normally included in a job description and ultimately in performance goals that are established when an employee is hired. These roles and expectations are subsequently updated as necessary during tenure on the job. In the case of performance goals, an employee is typically measured against the measures established with/for them during a performance period and the employee is subsequently either rewarded or not, depending on their performance results and organizational policy.

The key to successfully using a job description which outlines expectations and roles for each position is that they must be periodically examined and realistically updated to include actual responsibilities. This is because jobs often change rapidly in today's changing business environment and new task assignments are given verbally but not committed to writing. It is hard for employees to be measured against goals and expectations if there is no consistency. Also, when a new employee must be hired, those involved in the hiring process (e.g. supervisors and Human Resources personnel) need a realistic picture of typical responsibilities.

Creating the Best Possible Service Culture

Two of the keys to building a successful organization through a positive service culture are an organization's employees and its management philosophy.

Employees

To deliver effective customer service, an organization needs to seriously commit to and invest in its frontline staff. This means paying attention to the following factors:

- Recruit and hire the best possible applicants;

- Pay a competitive or above competitive rate;

- Create a work environment that helps motivate employees;

- Provide adequate training and tools for them to do their job;

- Empower employees to make decisions commensurate with their experience, education and position level;

- Provide state of the art equipment and support to employees;

- Supervise and coach for success.
Management

For supervisors and management to be effective in supporting a positive service culture, they must:

- Be knowledgeable of the organization and its products and services, and of the industry, as well as, of the competition;

- Have good communication skills;

- Treat each employee fairly and with respect;

- Allow employees to take responsibility and to exercise limited decision-making related to their job and customers;

- Provide frequent and ongoing coaching and support to employees (praise as well as constructive feedback);

- Act as an employee advocate.

Conclusion

There are so many things that can influence a customer's decision use an organization's products and services that managers do not have control over. Culture is not one of those things. By being proactive and applying some sound customer service and management strategies, any organization can increase its holdings in today's global business environment.

I am just an ordinary retiree who decided to use an open mind and investigate what is causing this issue. Like it or not, we cannot survive without foreign oil at this point in time. I cannot think of anything we do that does not depend on energy. Seventy one percent of oil used in America goes for transportation. The rest of the oil goes to grow our food, keep us warm or cool etc. We keep talking about alternative energy, but so far we have not come up with anything that provides more than a small division of our vigor needs. This narrative will focus on only our oil needs. My questions are why is gasoline is costing almost .00/gallon:

Have we used up all of our oil?

Do we have graft and fraud in the oil commerce instead of America's best interest?

Why do we send so much money to countries, which hate us, for oil?

How long can the working citizen keep /gal. Gas?

The Bakken

One oil source in the United States is called the "Bakken." This formation is located in North Dakota, Montana and extends up into Canada. In 2011, an assessment by Continental Resources Inc. (Cri) believes the Bakken could be the largest oil discovery in the last 30 to 40 years. Two discoveries in technology have made the extraction from shale possible. The best guess is that there is a huge number of oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and along the coastal waters of Alaska.

Offshore Drilling The United States produces 1.5 million barrels a day from offshore drilling. The 1.76 billion-acre Outer Continental Shelf. The shelf extends form 3 to 200 miles offshore and is rich with oil. Most of it is on the west coast from California to Alaska. The other big area is in the Gulf of Mexico. Southern California has 26 drilling platforms and 1500 wells operating. In the Gulf of Mexico there are over 172 drilling platforms which furnish 80% of the oil and 72% of the natural gas the comes from offshore drilling in the U.S. The 1981 moratorium on offshore drilling has left the Atlantic coast with very tiny oil exploration, but that will change as the moratorium was lifted in 2010.

Natural Gas

And we did it in three years. The politicians tell us oil from shale is not cost-effective. Canada did not hear that so they went ahead and did it anyway. I hope you feel like I do and think it is time to," wake up America." We need to get started on developing petroleum domestically. This would especially make sense as Delta's restructuring is dependent on steady fuel prices and, at this point, airlines can expect to pay even more for fuel in 2006 than they did last year. Once the airline business is sold, AirElite should be all that is left of Delta. The "new" business can thrive as the business aviation store is booming. The writing is on the wall for the airlines as added consolidation, retrenchment, and big time price pressure will remain. Indeed, once Virgin America gets official government approval to fly, its fleet of 105 contemporary Airbus jets will have much more appeal to passengers than Delta's aging fleet. One more guess for Delta to get out of the industrial airline business now.

Is my recommendation radical? Yes, it is. Delta, however, is in too much of a hole to ever recover. Great to perceive that now when their assets have some value than to wait until what they have slips away forever. By that time, even AirElite may get dragged down and suffer.
